Ba?lang?çta öz Türkçecilik hareketine mesafeli duran Nurullah Ataç, özellikle 1940’lar?n ortalar?ndan itibaren özle?tirmenin en büyük savunucular?ndan biri olmu?tur. Ataç’?n yaz?lar?nda kulland??? baz? yeni kelimeler, dil ara?t?rmac?lar?n?n da ilgisini çekmi? ve bu kelimeler üzerine çe?itli s?n?flama, derleme çal??malar? yap?lm??t?r. kelimeleri yap?lan çal??malarda asl?nda Ataç taraf?ndan türetilmeyen birtak?m için “Ataç türetilmi?tir.” bilgisinin verildi?i görülmü?tür. ?u durumda sözcüklerden hangilerinin türetilmi? oldu?u konusunda bir kar???kl?k vard?r sözcükler üzerinde geni? kapsaml? ara?t?rma yapmak gerekmektedir. 873 sözcük, daha önce ba?ka ara?t?rmac? “Ataç’?n Sözcükleri” adl? kitapta araya getirilmi?tir. Eldeki çal??mada Dil Devrimi’nin ilk y?llar?nda yay?mlanan hem eski de içeren sözlükler taranarak sözcü?ün kayna?? ara?t?r?lm??t?r. hangi kelimeyi sözlükten alm?? olabilece?ini, türetmi? olabilece?ini gösteren listeler olu?turulmu?tur. türetme birle?tirme yoluyla 306 sözcük yapt???, di?er ise sözlüklerden olabilece?i sonucuna var?lm??t?r. kökler kullanarak türetti?i bugün unutulmu?tur. Canl? köklerden 39 yaz? dilinde ya?amaktad?r. Günümüzde s?kça kullan?lan örne?in, ko?ul, güldürü, yap?t, ele?tiri, görece, günce vb. gibi birçok kelimenin belirlenmi?tir.
